I’m Beta Than This

Web No Comments »

Can someone please explain to me what the hell I’m doing? It’s a compulsion, almost an addiction, but whenever I see a new site pop up I feel obligated to get in as soon as it is available. I don’t know if it is because I want to be sure to get the user name that I want, or if it’s because I don’t want to be on the ass-end of the following conversation:

Cool Dude: Have you heard of
Clueless Dude: Nah. Is it any good?
Cool Dude: (realizing that he has discovered something before someone else) It RULEZ!
Clueless Dude: Sweet! I’ll have to go sign up…
Cool Dude: Sign up to be my friend. I’m F!rstToTheP@rty. I’m easy to find. There’s only me and three only people on there.

Then again, I’m not sure which end is the ass-end there.

No More Oscar Allure

I have to say, I for one am not surprised at the ratings for the 2008 Academy Awards. And while there is some truth in the fact that most people have not seen the movies in contention or have very little familiarity with the actors who walked away with the little gold men, I don’t think that’s the primary reason for the fall-off. In fact, it’s been going on for the last few years.

At one point, the Oscars used to be one of the few chances where we, the unwashed masses, had the opportunity to see our favorite stars shed their on-screen personas and give us a glimpse at who they really were. Now, in the day of the interwebs, TMZ and assorted sex-tapes, the illusion is mostly lost on us. With all the red carpet coverage, we are more impressed with how well they clean themselves up, cause we’ve definitely seen the pictures of them going to the grocery store and coming off the airplane and know how much movie magic helps them helps them look like the flawless stars that we once thought they were.

What Makes A Sport?

Sports No Comments »

Over the years my friends and I have often discussed criteria necessary to deem a competition a sport, and even though most of these debates occurred over countless pitchers of beer, we have been able to whittle down our standards to what we believe to be a fairly thorough list of items that must be met to satisfy our scrutiny. First and foremost there is an underlying assumption that physical activity is involved. Not the sweat you get while playing Halo, but the type that results from true physical exertion.

Pride or Prejudice

I had to wait a little while to let Michelle Obama’s comments from the other day sink in. Something was bothering me about the whole thing. It was kinda like with the series finale of the Sopranos where I felt I should have recognized something significant at the end, but it just wasn’t formulating in my mind. It was actually pretty humorous to read the initial responses to her statement about her pride in her country. There was everything from her being racist and unpatriotic to the assumption that, until that statement, she has been ashamed of her country (a word she never used). I had my initial reactions, too, but I felt like I couldn’t see what was happening just off screen…and all the answers lay there…

Then I saw Cindy McCain’s response the next day. And it began to make sense.

How Long Does Blu-Ray Have?

Tech No Comments »

HD-DVD is dead and Blu-Ray is pissing on its grave. But no one really wants to dub Blu-Ray the de facto medium yet. Most cite the fact that even though DVD sales are declining, it’s penetration rate is unparalleled (which I understand). But there are some that are hanging their hat on the presumptive channel of the future, downloads (which I don’t).

They Are GAMES After All

Uncategorized 1 Comment »

It appears as if video games have finally broken through. Well sort of. It will not be an official event, but there will be an event centered around video gaming at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China. It’s being dubbed a “Welcome Event” and is expected to be huge in China.

What is uncertain at this point is how tied to the games this event is going to be. Seeing as how it is not considered an “Exhibition Game”, this sounds like little more than a marketing event. But let’s assume it’s not. Is video gaming something that we want to see represented in the Olympics?

It’s Getting Crowded Out Here

Don’t ask me why I am doing this. Aren’t there enough people online purporting to offer insight on just about any topic imaginable? Maybe I’m doing it because most of those people are so blindly driven by irrational devotion. You can almost always figure out what they are going to say before they even push it through their keyboard. Will this be any different? Don’t know. I do know one thing, though. I can’t think of anything I like enough to evangelize. And nothing seems important enough to take seriously. I suppose I’m a middle-of-the-road kinda guy. Like Switzerland. Or roadkill.

…don’t really like where that ended up…
